                    Funding:

In June 2003, The old GRA received its first grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to hire a part-time archivist, and provide additional opportunities for service and outreach to the community. A second grant was awarded to the Archives in 2005 by the Ontario Trillium Foundation to assist with the wages of the part-time archivist. The second grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has been matched with funding by the Municipality of Port Hope.  In 2009, we received a very generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to support our innovative Let’s Make History initiative.

The position of the archivist is currently supported by the Municipality of Port Hope.

The funding received by the Port Hope Archives is divided into four categories: grants, municipal funding, memberships and fundraising.

The Port Hope Archives has been privileged to receive funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and greatly appreciates the funding provided by the Municipality of Port Hope.  The Archives depends on renewal of annual memberships, which assists the PHA in covering operating costs, particularly the purchase of archival safe containers and materials to house and protect the collection.

It is a little known fact that the Ontario provincial government does not financially support archives in Ontario (with the exception of the Archives of Ontario).  Therefore, it is vital that local archives fundraise and offer annual memberships to offset operating expenses.  The federal government provides funds to local archives through associations, such as the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA), which then distributes funds to provincial associations such as the Archives Association of Ontario (AAO).  Federal funding for archives through Library and Archives Canada to the CCA is not consistent in its amount, nor is it guaranteed.

To do your part in preserving the Municipality of Port Hope’s history, contact the Archives to take out an annual membership.

Donations from private individuals and businesses are always welcomed and may be made at the Archives by cheque, cash, or money order.  Tax
receipts are issued for donations of $25 or more.
